Zinnia and I, along with some friends, enjoyed a little field trip to Fetchin' Goat Farm yesterday. We met the sweetest little Mama and baby goats along with a smattering of free ranging chickens and turkeys. We made quick friends with these kind animals and happily spent an hour running around the goat yard meeting and greeting the flock.
Check out this smiling Mama below. She was my favorite by far, and I swear that's actually a smile on her face. I actually had no idea that goats were so gentle. They were all very patient with the many little hands eager to grasp their coats. And the baby goats (the kids) were adorable; leaping and bouncing off of rocks and boxes and chasing each other around the yard. They gave the toddlers a good show.
We had a blast and Zinnia is still talking about it this morning. She's recounting seeing the baby's drink their "Mama's milk" and remembering Miss Jill's rule about "no chasing" the babies. I think this experience will stay with her for a while. Happy times were had by all at Fetchin' Farms!

Finally. It's only been three months, but I finally made some time to get my crafty on. With some time dedicated to my sewing table, I turned to my all time favorite reversible pants pattern. These are the Quick Change Trousers from Anna Maria Horner's Handmade Beginnings, and since I actually had the book in my hands this time around (thank you, thank you Lisa P!) these were the easiest of the three I've made. They're definitely more refined than the "something likes" I made last Fall.
All this time I thought I wasn't a pattern-following kind of sewer. I was wrong. The pattern and instructions actually made these pants come together in a snap.
For fabric I used a Kaffe Fassett polka dot, along with Mona Luna trees and for the back yoke I used a beautiful and colorful Echino patchwork print; purchased locally from Elfreidas. I think these are my favorite pair so far. And I kinda really want a pair in my size.
Zinnia loves them, too and was quite happy to give me my requested booty shot. This girl cracks me up. Everyday.
Coming up next on the "to sew" list is a birthday dress. Someones second birthday is less than a month away!

The most exciting thing happening in the garden this week has to be the sprouts. The mustard and spinach I planted last week are up! If you look really closely at the picture below you can see three tiny sprouts (with a fourth uncurling its neck). This kind of activity really gets us going around here, but we're pretty easy to entertain.
And speaking of being entertained, Steve, with Zinnia's help, got most of the pile of "big dirt" (as she calls it) moved to it's new home out back. It's amazing how much room those junipers took up along the garden. We're looking forward to seeing more edibles in their place.
The second coolest thing happening is this tomato trellis that Steve and his dad built. I know, it's not a conventional looking tomato trellis, but check it out here, full of plants and you'll understand where I'm heading with this design. I'm ready to retire those unsightly metal cages that we've been using for years. You may know the ones... they fall over from the weight of tomato plants heavy with fruit and become pretty much worthless? Yeah, those. We'll still have to keep a few of those around but with this new trellis plus one (or two) inspired by these, and I hope to get rid of most of the metal ones.
Out front, my tulips are starting to bud. I have no idea what color these twenty or so bulbs will be as they were a gift from the city of Boulder. The city does an amazing spring Tulip display on the historic Pearl Street mall and then, come August they give away all the bulbs. It's a first-come-first-served affair and each person gets one bag of mystery tulips. I can't wait to see what I ended up with (red? black? yellow? purple?). I will totally be back this summer for more free tulips!

She picks up around the house. She loves and entertains Zinnia. She does the dishes. She runs out to pick up forgotten ice cream. She'll even change a dirty diaper.
But let me tell you, the girl can cook, too.
Look at this asparagus, mushroom, feta, pesto-infused quinoa creation. We practically licked the pan clean.
Needless to say, we are loving having our niece here.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, family visiting season has begun here at the Coffee beans house. My twenty two year old niece has been with us a week as of today. She's making a huge step in life by moving away from home in Germany to forge her own way, here in Boulder. She's with us until she gets her footing and we love having her here. Especially Zinnia, who I'm sure believes that Chrissi is her own personal playmate.
This weekend also brought Grandpa to town. Our beautiful weather has allowed for plenty of time in the garden as well as some time spent on the trails.
Hope you had a great weekend. Tomorrow we welcome the Spring Equinox! Let the celebrations of all things green and blooming begin. Yippee!
